Gary Gygax Rest In Peace

Postby Boredflak on Fri Mar 07, 2008 2:42 pm

I put a little tribute page up with some links to various stories about Gary Gygax & his passing:

http://www.d20srd.org/ripGary.htm

I only met him a half-dozen times, but he was always friendly and enthusiastic about talking to me about gaming.

The first time I met him, he signed my first D&D book (1st ed DMG). I was surprised at my own emotional reaction when he did it. I actually got a little choked up

I"m hoping they'll put together some sort of memorial service at Gen Con this year...

If you're interested in updating your list, User Friendly had a tribute in Sunday's strip.

I wrote a short obit (for my own comfort really) and ran Tomb of Horrors in his honor, haven't yet finished the synopsis for how tomb of horrors went, but it ended up a TPK. and I was glad it was, anyway it's at http://meadhelm.net (which by the way actually just redirects to my blogspot blog, just so the redirect doesnt catch anyone unawares) Tomb of horror was really fun for me to run (ran in 3e)

It seems little comfort and some measure of respect....to do a icon honor like gary Gygax

Just reading some of the replies......we old gamers from the chainmail or TSR days
i wonder what would have happened with out his influence......what our lives would be like or paths travelled

I for one will admit.......
it was a mind blowing and thought provoking evening when my best buddy came to visit.
He place on the table a curious set of books and dice........we each grabbed book and started reading and quoting
material.....funny how the table was round....another story

Did we play that night....NA.....we created a world....that weekend......and it grew...and grew......
and it still is growing......with the next generation...our children and grand children.........now several unplished novels and manuscripts

When i retreat to the manshack and look at the shelves of first edition to 3rd.......and thousands of maps and accessories..............and the thousands of figures..............
I tear and nod goes out to a man i never met...........for i reflect back to the days of young man who path
lead him to be a master college instructor and bushman.......pappa bear........from a possible life of crime

thanks GARY.........and RIP.....ya earned it
and thanks for the newbies that sit at the new round table.......learning the 3 r's of school...and not lost in the video game world...........better yet learning to interact with family and friends..........how to be creative and explore their imagination to utlimate become some one...........

the list goes on and on...........Just thanks
where ever you are may your 20 sided dice roll 20 more often then none......and the fire pit be warmed by friends and comrades
