Updates - 14 June 2007

Postby Boredflak on Wed Jun 13, 2007 11:33 pm

I've purchased and incorporated a javascript based offline search engine into the local version of the site that is downloadable by subscribers.

This offline version of the site now contains all content and features that the live site has. 8)

Update: I've also converted the site search to use Google custom search. It's faster, more accurate, and more powerful.

Have you considered using a Google Custom Search for the online search engine? It would allow users to use Google's more advanced search methods for more specific criteria.

I actually experimented once with creating one for this site for personal use, and it worked really well.

Yes I have. I've been having problems with the current site search and frankly Google just does a better job with the results. I'm not thrilled about the results page being served off-site and having ads, but I think the superior search function is worth it. I'll see If I can get it incorporated into the site this weekend.

Actually, I think the AdSense is optional.

In additiona, using the Co-Op tools is pretty cool. IIRC, you can even create categories based on different URLs including directory paths and the user can select those categories as filters.

Okay. I've finished switching over to a Google custom search for the site. It's actually very nice. It even has some convenient filters.

The old site search put a heavy load on the server (often to such an extent that it would produce errors). Thanks for the suggestion.

Looks and works great, you might need to update the Firefox search add-on. I love it but it still uses the old search.

Also, a bit off topic but the link for the blank character sheet is non-existent.
