Postby Boredflak on Thu Nov 24, 2005 11:52 pm

Happy Thanksgiving! In addition to piles of turkey, you can feast on new variant magic rules:

- Metamagic Components
- Spontaneous Metamagic
- Spell Points
- Recharge Magic
- Legendary Weapons
- Item Familiars
- Incantations

This is continuing from yesterday's updates.

As always, proofreading and bug reporting are greatly appreciated!

From the Item Familiar rules:
"For example, Boredflak, a 6th-level character with 19,000 XP, chooses to invest her item familiar, a ring, with some of her life energy."

Is there something you're not telling us, madam?

Ha! It looks like old Boredflak the Boltlobber had a run in with a Girdle of Femininity/Masculinity! The curse has now been lifted. Thanks.

I went ahead and finished up variant magic rules with the addition of incantations.

I also added this to the list of updates in the main entry above.

Enjoy!

Looks like you're still having some identity issues...
Item Familiar: Invest Skill Ranks wrote:For example, Boredflak has just achieved 7th character level, and he takes a level of wizard. Because of his high Intelligence score, he gains 7 skill points...She uses an asterisk to note that 1 rank for each of six skills resides in his ring. Since that adds up to a total of 6 skill ranks in the ring, he gains two +1 bonuses he can apply to any skill. He decides to assign both bonuses (a total of +2) to his Concentration skill. Boredflak only has 1 rank in the cross-class skill Spot. If he had desired, he could have applied a single +1 bonus to that skill, but not both.

Even a wish spell has only a 50% chance of reversing the effects of one of those blasted girdles. I think the gender bending is done now. Thanks!

For example, Boredflak is a 4th-level wizard. Her 2nd-level spells (the highest possible level she can cast) and 1st-level spells (the second highest possible level she can cast) take 1d6+1 rounds to recharge, and her 0-level spells (the third highest possible level she can cast) take 1d4+1 rounds to recharge. When she attains 5th level, her 3rd-level and 2nd-level spells take 1d6+1 rounds to recharge and her 1st- and 0-level spells take 1d4+1 rounds to recharge. (Specific recharge spells have their own recharge times that don’t match these values.)

Errata:

General note
- There are lots of spells and monsters listed without links.

Metamagic Components
- Under "Expensive Versions of Existing Material Components", 5th sentence: "Rresilient sphere...." should be "Resilient sphere...." (one r).

Spontaneous Metamagic
- Under "Behind The Curtain: Spontaneous Metamagic", 2nd paragraph, 1st sentence: "metamagicaffected" should be "metamagic-affected".

Spell Points
- Under "Behind The Curtain: Spell Points", 2nd sentence: "Since she’s no longer tied to using a specific number of spell slots, he can much more easily adapt to situations." First clause says "she's" and second clause says "he". Presumably some lingering effect of the girdle of masculinity/femininity that's been causing so many problems.
- Under "Bonus Spell Points and Bonus Spells", 3rd paragraph, 1st sentence: "...(even if he don't...)." should be "...(even if he doesn't...)."
- Under "Metamagic And Spell Points", 7th paragraph, 3rd sentence: "...(a 7thlevel wizard...)." should be "...(a 7th level wizard...)." with a space.

Recharge Magic
- In the 1st paragraph, last sentence: "Longerduration spells...." should be "Longer duration spells...." with a space.
- Under "Behind The Curtain: Recharge Magic", 6th paragraph, last sentence: "...with regard to general re charge spells and significantly less flexibility with re gard to specific recharge spells." should be "...with regard to general recharge spells and significantly less flexibility with regard to specific recharge spells." with spaces removed from "recharge" and "regard".
- Under "General Recharge Spells", 4th paragraph: it uses teleport as an example of a general recharge spell, but teleport has a specific recharge time of 4 hours.

I have not yet read the other sections in this release.

The Sample Themed Lists columns in "Summon Monster Variants" are looking a little dodgy here since they're right next to each other. I'm using Opera.

I noticed the same thing in Mozilla 1.6. I haven't tried any other browsers. I'm running 1024x768, which I'm sure is a contributing factor. I worked around it by changing my Zoom level to 75%.

This was actually in the November 23 release, not this one, but I'm sure you won't hold that against us.

In "Item Familiars":

This last score should not come into play very often—an item familiars is completely loyal to its master, unless its master radically changes alignment or one or the other is affected by some strange compulsion.
